    Empowering Young Families

This past year our good friends and former directors of the Shenandoah County Fair Pageant introduced the contestants to the importance of community service through pageantry. We continue this tradition and believe that pageantry and community service go hand in hand. Please consider participating in this years fundraising event!

This years’ pageant theme is “Caring Communities.”  In keeping with this theme, we chose a very deserving organization located in our community. “Healthy Families” is a grant funded organization that promotes education for first time parents. Through home visits, they are able to educate parents on infant health, nutrition, home safety, shaken baby syndrome and a host of other topics. The education and guidance provided to these first time parents has a direct impact on improving their parenting skills. “Healthy Families” has made a difference in the lives of many children in Shenandoah County. Let’s help them help even more Shenandoah County babies!

“Healthy Families” is in need of many items. Please take a look at the following list. We ask that you purchase as many items as you wish and place them in a clear, plastic shoe box. (Shoe boxes will be available at orientation.) The boxes will be collected at the pageant and distributed to new moms and babies during the first visit from “Healthy Families.” These items are greatly appreciated!

• Baby Wipes
• Books (soft books, baby books)
• Rattles
• Small baby toy
• Baby Nail Clippers
• Thermometer
• Onesies
• Something for mom. Many of us can remember how overwhelming being a new mom can be. A small bottle of shampoo, body lotion, or hand lotion would be greatly appreciated.

 Items that are currently well stocked are pacifiers, lotion and bottles. Avoid powder as it can cause respiratory problems.

If you are unable to purchase items, please consider a monetary donation. “Healthy Families” is currently building a video library. The videos will be taken into the homes of new parents and will cover topics important to the health, nutrition and safely of the new baby.  Please make checks payable to “Healthy Families” and bring to the pageant. They will be presented on stage to the organization.
