Frequently Asked Questions:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can my daughter wear make-up?

Yes, your daughter can wear make-up, but please make it age appropriate. Less is more, and the younger the child, the less she should wear. Make-up should complement your daughter’s natural beauty, not overpower it.

  1. What dress length is appropriate?

Younger contestants will probably be more comfortable in a short dress. Flower girl dresses and tea-length dresses are becoming more popular and are fine for younger contestants. Just remember that a ballgown that is too short is not tea-length! Tea-length is at the knee, ballgowns should brush the floor. Pre-Teen and up should be in a long gown.

  1. Does my gown have to have straps?

Yes, if you are in Junior Teen or younger. Any contestant younger than 15 must have at least spaghetti straps on their gowns. Points will be deducted for any contestant in a dress that is not age appropriate.

  1. Can I wear a straight gown or a gown with a slit?

Yes, if you are in the Miss group or older. Any contestant 17 years old and up may wear a straight gown and may have a slit. Points will be deducted for any contestant in a dress that is not age appropriate.

  1. What color shoes should I wear?

All contestants in a short dress should wear closed-toe white dress shoes with white socks. Strappy sandals are probably too casual for short dresses. Contestants in long gowns should wear clear shoes or white sandals with an ankle strap. Contestants in the older divisions should wear shoes that complement your gown. Remember, judges eyes should not be drawn to feet!

  1. Is this a “glitzy” pageant?

Absolutely not. Points will be deducted for contestants with too much make-up or a dress that overwhelms the child. Think “soft and pretty” and you will be fine. Older contestants, of course, may wear more makeup and we encourage you to have fun with gown selection.

  1. Are “Sunday Best” dresses OK?

You do not have to purchase an expensive pageant gown to be competitive. The fit of the dress and how the dress complements your daughter is most important. However, be careful not to choose a dress that is too casual. If you choose “Sunday Best”, it should be dressy with closed toe, white dress shoes and white socks.
